Harry Vardon Exhibition

Harry Vardon Exhibition
Philadelphia Country Club
April 21, 1900

In 1900 Harry Vardon visited the United States for an exhibition tour. He was sponsored by the Spalding Company which was promoting its new golf ball, the Vardon Flyer. On April 21 Vardon was at the Philadelphia Country Club for one of those eighty-some exhibitions. His $250 fee was put up by the six golf clubs that made up the Golf Association of Philadelphia at that time. The six clubs were Belmont GC (later Aronimink), Huntingdon Valley CC, Merion Cricket Club (later Merion GC), Philadelphia Country Club, Philadelphia Cricket Club and St. Davids GC. He was opposed by two golf professionals, which were selected by the GAP. (Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Harry Gullane and Huntingdon Valley’s Willie Thomson) Vardon played their better-ball and won 1-up.
